that is if they even know about it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2928\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2928\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/FutureBoyConan-poster.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2928 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/FutureBoyConan-poster-210x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/FutureBoyConan-poster-210x300.jpeg 210w, https:\/\/strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/FutureBoyConan-poster.jpeg 420w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2928\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Future Boy Conan\u00a0(1978)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Really, it\u2019s got two strikes against it. \u00a0First off, since it predates the formation of Studio Ghibli by a number of years, it\u2019s not usually included (or at least not prominently) on a list of Miyazaki\u2019s major works. \u00a0Second, since it\u2019s an animated television show from the late 1970s, most fans who <em>are<\/em> aware of it simply write it off as \u201csomething Miyazaki did before he got good.\u201d \u00a0At least, that\u2019s more or less what I thought.<\/p>\n<p>Now I can\u2019t quite remember what spurred me to actually check out <em>Future Boy Conan<\/em>, but I suspect it was seeing some of the models done by members of\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/home.b01.itscom.net\/y-kano\/miyazaki-index.htm\">Miyazaki Mecha Modellers Club<\/a>. \u00a0Those guys and gals do some inspiring work, so that\u2019s probably it. \u00a0Regardless, whatever it was, I\u2019m glad. \u00a0After watching the whole series, <em>Conan<\/em> quickly became a favourite.<\/p>\n<p>While it might not be as grand or as well-animated as the feature films, it makes up for it in story. \u00a0Set in a post-apocalyptic water world, <em>Future Boy Conan<\/em>\u2019s got a little bit of everything that you\u2019d expect from Hayao Miyazaki &#8211; two kids trying to cope with the mistakes of the previous generation, a subtle environmental message, and some wonderful flying machines.<\/p>\n<p>One of those machines, the Falco, will be featured in another build project, but I couldn\u2019t resist the urge to get <em>Conan<\/em> represented in the Ghibli project, so I kicked it off with a small scratchbuild featuring the \u201cmecha\u201d \u00a0from the series &#8211; the Robonoid! \u00a0Given how small it is, it seemed like the perfect\u00a0transition project after taking a bit of time away from the workbench.<\/p>\n<h3>The build:<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2980\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2980\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/robonoid.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2980 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/robonoid-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/robonoid-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/robonoid-768x567.jpg 768w, https:\/\/strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/robonoid-1024x756.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/robonoid.jpg 1128w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2980\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Captain Dyce and his Robonoid<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since there\u2019s obviously no commercial kit available for a 1\/72 scale Robonoid from a forgotten 1970s anime, it was going to have to be 100% scratch. \u00a0However, give that it\u2019s basically just a seat in a box sitting on some tubes, I figured I could manage it easily enough. \u00a0I had to make some guesstimates as to the size in 1\/72 scale, but there\u2019s always a bit of flexibility in builds based off comics or animation &#8211; the size sometimes varies from panel to panel or scene to scene anyway.<\/p>\n<p>After settling on a \u201cthat\u2019s about right\u201d size, I cut some styrene strips and glued them into a box shape. \u00a0I had a bench seat left over from one of my Tintin projects, so that came in handy. \u00a0For the arms and legs I just cut up some styrene tubes and used bits of styrene rods for the joints.
